Metabolism – The “Holy Grail” of Wellness – Part 2

How Meta-Inflammation Impacts Our Metabolism

Meta- Inflammation -What is It?

Chronic overnutrition and obesity induces low-grade inflammation throughout the body. Termed “meta-inflammation,” this chronic state of inflammation is influenced by macrophages (immune cells) located within the colon, liver, muscle, and adipose tissue.

Meta-inflammation has been linked to

  • Insulin Resistance *
  • fluid retention
  • High blood pressure
  • atherosclerosis
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • cancer
  • autoimmunity
  • profound impacts on global health

Metabolic Syndrome = Insulin Resistance. *

Insulin Resistance is what we term “Type 3 Diabetes” which is worse than Type 2 because it is Strongly Linked to Alzheimer’s. Instead of converting food to energy we convert food to Fat and Free Radicals that create massive injury & inflammation.

Inflammation is the Gateway to diseases of aging and Why Metabolism is the “Holy Grail of Wellness”.

When We Fix Metabolism We Can Slow Aging and Sometimes Reverse It.

In 2004 the above information was initially published. The chief medical and scientific officer of the American Heart, American Diabetes and American Cancer Society got together stated that Metabolic Syndrome (Extra belly fat) is the “Gateway to Chronic Disease”.

Metabolic Syndrome Doubles heart disease and stroke, Elevates Triglycerides and Cholesterol, leads to High Blood Pressure, Erectile Dysfunction, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Type 3 Diabetes – Alzheimer’s Disease and Cognitive Decline, Osteoperosis, Fatty Liver, Obesity, Sleep Apnea, Sarcopenia (Loss of Muscle. This would also mean loss of bone), Type 2 Diabetes

VAT – Visceral Adipose Tissue is an inflammation factory. This is the excess belly fat.

How Do we solve this?

Fixing the Metabolism – which isn’t always easy! We need synergy – an integrated program which addresses all the puzzle pieces. Synergy – 1+1+1=9!

Metabolism – The “Holy Grail” of Wellness

What is metabolism? Metabolism is converting fuel to energy…OR food to fat and free radicals (which creates massive inflammation and damage. This is like rust on the inside and creates hyper- accelerated aging) A damaged metabolism massively weakens our immune system. Why? Because our immune systems needs energy, energy, energy to work correctly.

The Mitochondria is in every cell of body. This is where we make energy. Metabolism really happens on the cell level.  We want them to be efficient. LLLT (Low Level Light Therapy) or Photbiomodulation, uses low levels of light to activate or energize and rev up the mitochondria so that we not only make more energy, but make more of the mitochondria. Our metabolism depends on how many mitochondria we have! This is called Mitochondrial Biogenesis. If we are healthy, we have up to 2000 per microscopic cell in our heart and our brain. When they work right, they generate energy called ATP.  This ATP is recycled many times and a 145-pound male should make at least 160 pounds of  ATP a day. When we are not healthy, we don’t make enough. Now we are tired, we put on fat, we ache, and many other problems.

By 2030 half of all Americans will be overweight. If you are even a little overweight, chances are you are also inflamed. They are probably overweight in the belly – which is known as the “fat that kills”. Excess belly fat, especially that around the waist, is a major source of inflammation.

What kind of diseases caused by too much inflammation? Alzheimer, Cancer, heart disease, arthritis, dementia, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, accelerated aging, etc. The risk of pneumonia and Covid risk also goes way up.

The average American diet per year is over 150 pounds of sugar. Sugar makes us fat, especially in the mid section – the gut area. We have been told fat makes us fat. This is Not true. Healthy fats make us lean. Sugar makes us fat! The worse kind of sugars are the ones you drink (Sodas, energy drinks, etc.) Eating unprocessed food is one of the number one things you can do to make the biggest difference in your health.

  • Eat only fresh, live foods.
  • Minimize food that comes out of food coffins – plastic, boxes, aluminum foil, cans.
    • Where do you find these healthy foods in the supermarket? Around the outer aisles.

Meta – inflammation

We as Americans eat too many calories and too few nutrients. Think of junk food such as a Twinkie. It is full of calories and no nutrients. We want to eat foods that are the opposite – they have a ton of nutrients and very few calories such as Kale. Too many calories without enough nutrients creates inflammation, throughout the body called Meta Inflammation,

  • Chronic overnutrition and obesity induces low-grade inflammation throughout the body. Termed “meta-inflammation,” this chronic state of inflammation is mediated by macrophages located within the colon, liver, muscle, and adipose tissue. Especially around the belly.
    • When we treat the belly with laser, people lose inches, but we are really reducing their inflammation because inflammation damages our metabolism.

Could Cold Laser Be The Next Big Thing In Helping Thyroid Patients?

A lot has been written about the connections between Hashimoto’s and gluten, environmental toxins, leaky gut, etc. However, very little has been discussed about the potential use for Cold Laser therapy, even though several recent research studies found some promising results.

Hashimoto’s antibodies can lead to destruction of thyroid tissue, which can result not only in the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction, but also changes in thyroid appearance on ultrasound, and the presence of abnormal blood markers.

Currently, most traditional medical treatments aim to control the symptoms or get the TSH and T4 into the medical normal range while often ignoring the underlying root causes and the destruction that occurs in the gland.

The exciting thing about these studies on lasers and their effects on the thyroid is that they appear to not only trigger tissue regeneration, they also seem to help normalize function and decrease the need for medications, without any side effects.

The most recent study comes out of the July 2015 edition of the journal Photochemistry and Photobiology.  In this study, the thyroid glands of rats were damaged with gamma radiation, and then were treated with low level laser of 632 nanometers for 6 sessions. The study concluded that the laser improved the rat’s thyroid function, liver function, antioxidant levels, and blood cell markers. No side effects were noted. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25975382

The August 2014 edition of the journal Photomedicine and Laser Surgery found that cold laser treatment to patients with autoimmune thyroid disease significantly increased levels of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1). (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25101534) Why is this important? The August 1991 edition of the Journal of Autoimmunity found that TGF-β1 could calm down and suppress auto immune attacks, and that it may even prove helpful in causing remission of Graves disease. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1777015)

Patients with autoimmune thyroid disease often have altered blood flow within the thyroid. The 2012 journal ISRN Endocrinology found that 10 laser treatments improved blood flow within the thyroid, as visualized with Dopplar ultrasound. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23316383)

But perhaps the most exciting study I came across was in the August 2010 journal Lasers in Surgery and Medicine. Patients were given 10 treatments over 5 weeks. They found that all patients needed less thyroid medication, including 47% who did not require any medication through the 9-month follow-up. Can you imagine being able to go 9 months without needing thyroid medication?

Furthermore, the medication dosage needed in the other participants decreased, and remained decreased even 9 months later. TPOAb (thyroid antibody) levels also decreased,  and thyroid tissue appearance improved on ultrasound. This means that thyroid tissue damaged by auto immune attacks was actually getting repaired with laser stimulation. Again, no side effects were noted. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20662037)

These are just a few of the exciting studies that support the use of lasers in thyroid disease, but the applications go even beyond just the thyroid. As far back as December 1993, there was a far reaching study from Japan in the Keio Journal of Medicine that found that laser therapy on cancer cells “inhibits growth and increases cell-specific destruction”, and that “other immune system-related diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, some forms of eczema, asthma and asthma-related ulceration, have responded well to” laser therapy. I found numerous other studies that also suggested that cold laser was effective even for helping with thyroid cancers. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8126975)

So let’s review what these studies found. Cold laser therapy was shown to:

  1. Reduce TPO antibody levels
  2. Reduce the need for T4 medications in a majority of patients, even 9 months after treatment, and eliminate the need in nearly half the patients in one study
  3. Increase the amount of cellular antioxidants such as glutathione
  4. Improve thyroid tissue and vascularization on ultrasound examination
  5. Increase levels of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), which calms down the auto immune activity and may have the potential to cause remission of Graves’ disease
  6. Decrease the activity of inflammatory molecules such as nuclear factor kappa beta and interleukin 6
  7. Stimulate the repair of tissue damaged by the thyroid auto immune attack
  8. Have no side effects

These are all pretty powerful findings. I was surprised to find the data going back over 20 years supporting cold laser’s use on auto immune diseases, considering that most of us have never heard about it in mainstream media or from our doctors.

Obviously more studies are needed, but the current research suggests that lasers may provide significant help for the growing numbers of auto immune thyroid patients out there. Have any of you out there tried this therapy or heard about it from your doctor? If you have, please comment with what your results have been.

Understanding Inflammation

Key Points:

  1. Excessive chronic inflammation is the primary cause of virtually every chronic disease of aging:
    • Arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis
    • Chronic Pain
    • Osteoporosis
    • Dementia: Alzheimer’s type, Lewy Body, Vascular dementia
    • Heart attacks, stroke, and vascular disease
    • Multiple Sclerosis, ALS,
    • Diabetes & Obesity
    • Most forms of Cancer
    • Feeling Old
  2. Inflammation is controlled by our Immune System (which is controlled by our brain)
  3. 80% of our Immune System is located around our digestive tract (gut)
  4. Our lifestyle is either activating the “ON” switch of inflammation or activating the balanced On/Off regulation of Wellness
  5. Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) aka photo biomodulation is a powerful tool to turn off excessive inflammation and the lasers we use at Renovare are FDA level 1a cleared (the most stringent research-based approval available) to reduce nociceptive chronic pain ANYWHERE in the body.
  6. The resolution of inflammation is fibrosis (scar tissue) that creates joint and fascial restriction and chronic pain. These tissues need to glide and slide to close the pain gate and keep us flexible and pain-free.
  7. Resolution of inflammation in the lung (from asthma, infection, pneumonia, COVID, COVID vaccines) is fibrosis leading to scarring and lung damage.
  8. Spinal adjusting/manipulation of joints and soft tissue is required to improve the mechanical integrity lost from fibrosis to create the neuro sequence closing the pain gate & restoring healing and health.

The PgE2 (Prostaglandin E2) Inflammation Pathway involves:

Eicosanoids – inflammatory prostaglandins: our Omega 3/6 ratio controls this signaling pathway to a large extent

  • The same cascade that creates inflammation creates cancer
  • Too much Omega 6 high linoleic vegetable oil drives inflammation – the wrong fats may be even worse than too much sugar
  • Quality Omega 3 EPA-DHA Fish oil dampens inflammation
  • Low level lasers dampen inflammation with NO SIDE EFFECTS, only side benefits like:
    • Systemic Energy Boost – Give Your Cells Back the Energy of Your Youth!
    • Reduced Swelling & Inflammation and Pain Relief
    • Accelerated Tissue Regeneration
    • Activation of anti-aging/longevity pathways
    • Improved blood flow to promote accelerated healing & repair
    • Neurogenesis – making new nerve cells
    • Mitochondrial Biogenesis – making new mitochondria
    • Stem cell production and integration
    • Healing of Leaky Gut and Leaky Brain
    • Promote all antioxidant systems including glutathione
    • Protects from free-radical damage
    • Increased parasympathetic activity/Vagal stimulation for calm, peaceful, digestion, detox, and reduced inflammation
    • Repair and protect against DNA & RNA damage & telomere shortening
    • Decrease stress hormones and promote youth hormones like HGH
    • Healing with No Drugs, No Surgery, No Side-Effects

635 nm Red Lasers (LLLT) knocks out COX /prostaglandin, IL-18, & TNF Cytokine pain pathways. Violet lasers knock out IL-6 cytokine pain pathway.

Understanding Cytokines

  • Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is the most powerful Cytokine “ON” switch for inflammation and is converted in the liver to hsCRP, a key inflammation heart attack & stroke risk lab marker that appears on lab test panels.
  • 405 nm Violet Laser knocks out the IL-6 Cytokine pathway especially well
  • 635 nm Red Laser knock out IL-18
  • Both lasers turn on IL-10  – an ideal combination

VAT is an Inflammation Factory

Visceral (around the abdominal organs) Adipose (fat) Tissue is abbreviated as VAT.  This is often called the “Fat that Kills” since it strongly elevates heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, dementia, chronic pain, and chronic disease risk. VAT turns on inflammation dramatically.

VAT can be stubborn and resistant to most weight loss programs. What works is repairing our Metabolism to correct Insulin Resistance or Metabolic Syndrome

Based on our years of experience and training in functional medicine and functional neurology, we have created an Integrated Metabolism Repair program below:

Renovare Metabolism

Repair & Fat Burn Programs

2X/week sessions:

  • Zerona FDA approved Fat burning laser sessions
  • 30 min NOW-T and Power Plate session after Zerona session
  • Custom supplement, lifestyle, and support program to help you each step of the way in repairing your metabolism

The FDA approved Zerona Laser system energizes fat (adipose) cells to release their stored triglycerides (fat) into our circulatory system where they can be carried away to be burned as energy in our mitochondria.

Role of Our Microbiome in Staying Well With Viral Infections

The Microbiome is currently one of the most intensely researched areas in science. PubMed, the NIH federal library of medical research, shows over 86,000 results for published research papers on our Microbiome, almost all of it in the last five years.

What is our Microbiome?

What are practical steps to support our microbiome and our immune system so we can stay well in challenging times:

It is the 100 Trillion non-human cells that live in us and on us.  It is the “germs” that live on our skin (2 million per ½ inch square on our forearm), in our mouth, our sinuses, our bloodstream, our gut and everywhere inside and outside our body.  In fact, our human cells are outnumbered by the “germs” that make up our Microbiome.  In reality,  we are 100 Trillion “germs” covered in human skin.

Most of these “germs” are bacteria and viruses that seek to coexist peacefully with us and promote our health and wellbeing. Most of them live in our gut, especially in our Large Intestine.  They play critical roles in digestion, metabolism, immune health, brain health, and store 98% of all the genetic information (DNA) we need to stay healthy and thrive.  In fact, our mitochondria talk to our gut bacteria.  We need a healthy microbiome to have healthy mitochondria, the foundation of energy and Wellness!

Staying Well In  Covid

If our immune system can handle 100 trillion germs in and on us, can it also handle the common cold, flu, or Covid virus?  Of course – as long as we take care of our immune system so it is working reasonably well.  What would happen if we put as much time, effort, and energy into boosting our Microbiome and immune Wellness as we do to masking, distancing, and worrying?

  1. The less your food has been doctored, the less you need a doctor. Minimize eating food that has been processed or doctored.  Go light on dead food that comes from “food coffins” –  the boxes, cans, and plastic that entombs dead food.  Eat more of the “fresh stuff”.
  2. Eat what your body likes rather than what you like.  We tend to like the sugary “junk food” loaded with excitotoxic taste enhancers that excite our brain neurons to death.  They also starve our microbiome “rainforest” of the critical fiber it depends on.  A piece of cake feeds only us and makes us old, fat, and sick.  A piece of broccoli feeds both our body and our microbiome to keep us lean, energized, and youthful.
  3. Fix your metabolism.  When is works, you have a “thin person” microbiome. When it is in trouble, we often develop a “fat person” microbiome.  Fixing your metabolism often requires a “solve the puzzle” approach involving optimizing our mitochondria, gut health, brain balance, eating smart & supplementing to fit our unique genetic needs, optimize sleep, and detox.  Get guidance from experienced professionals like we have at Renovare if you need help in this area.
  4. Feed Your Microbiome Diversity.  Repairing our microbiome diversity is critical to restoring Wellness. An important indicator of a healthy microbiome is Great bowel movements.  This means at least 2/day, formed dark brown, don’t float, no straining, and almost no need to toilet tissue to clean after.  Here are the practical steps:
  5. Eat the Rainbow.  Strive to eat 9 colors or fresh/frozen veggies or fruits per day.  Always go heavy on veggies and much lighter on fruit.
  6. Each day, eat one of the Root Veggies, eat two of the prebiotic foods, and at least one forkful of a fermented food from the lists below
Root VeggiesPrebiotic FoodsFermented Food with Live culture (in refrigerator section)
Turnips          Dandelion GreensSauerkraut (Wild Brine, Bubbles brands, etc)
