Metabolism – The “Holy Grail” of Wellness

What is metabolism? Metabolism is converting fuel to energy…OR food to fat and free radicals (which creates massive inflammation and damage. This is like rust on the inside and creates hyper- accelerated aging) A damaged metabolism massively weakens our immune system. Why? Because our immune systems needs energy, energy, energy to work correctly.

The Mitochondria is in every cell of body. This is where we make energy. Metabolism really happens on the cell level.  We want them to be efficient. LLLT (Low Level Light Therapy) or Photbiomodulation, uses low levels of light to activate or energize and rev up the mitochondria so that we not only make more energy, but make more of the mitochondria. Our metabolism depends on how many mitochondria we have! This is called Mitochondrial Biogenesis. If we are healthy, we have up to 2000 per microscopic cell in our heart and our brain. When they work right, they generate energy called ATP.  This ATP is recycled many times and a 145-pound male should make at least 160 pounds of  ATP a day. When we are not healthy, we don’t make enough. Now we are tired, we put on fat, we ache, and many other problems.

By 2030 half of all Americans will be overweight. If you are even a little overweight, chances are you are also inflamed. They are probably overweight in the belly – which is known as the “fat that kills”. Excess belly fat, especially that around the waist, is a major source of inflammation.

What kind of diseases caused by too much inflammation? Alzheimer, Cancer, heart disease, arthritis, dementia, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, accelerated aging, etc. The risk of pneumonia and Covid risk also goes way up.

The average American diet per year is over 150 pounds of sugar. Sugar makes us fat, especially in the mid section – the gut area. We have been told fat makes us fat. This is Not true. Healthy fats make us lean. Sugar makes us fat! The worse kind of sugars are the ones you drink (Sodas, energy drinks, etc.) Eating unprocessed food is one of the number one things you can do to make the biggest difference in your health.

  • Eat only fresh, live foods.  
  • Minimize food that comes out of food coffins – plastic, boxes, aluminum foil, cans.
    • Where do you find these healthy foods in the supermarket? Around the outer aisles.

Meta – inflammation

We as Americans eat too many calories and too few nutrients. Think of junk food such as a Twinkie. It is full of calories and no nutrients. We want to eat foods that are the opposite – they have a ton of nutrients and very few calories such as Kale. Too many calories without enough nutrients creates inflammation, throughout the body called Meta Inflammation,

  • Chronic overnutrition and obesity induces low-grade inflammation throughout the body. Termed “meta-inflammation,” this chronic state of inflammation is mediated by macrophages located within the colon, liver, muscle, and adipose tissue. Especially around the belly.
    • When we treat the belly with laser, people lose inches, but we are really reducing their inflammation because inflammation damages our metabolism.

Could Cold Laser Be The Next Big Thing In Helping Thyroid Patients?

A lot has been written about the connections between Hashimoto’s and gluten, environmental toxins, leaky gut, etc. However, very little has been discussed about the potential use for Cold Laser therapy, even though several recent research studies found some promising results.

Hashimoto’s antibodies can lead to destruction of thyroid tissue, which can result not only in the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction, but also changes in thyroid appearance on ultrasound, and the presence of abnormal blood markers.

Currently, most traditional medical treatments aim to control the symptoms or get the TSH and T4 into the medical normal range while often ignoring the underlying root causes and the destruction that occurs in the gland.

The exciting thing about these studies on lasers and their effects on the thyroid is that they appear to not only trigger tissue regeneration, they also seem to help normalize function and decrease the need for medications, without any side effects.

The most recent study comes out of the July 2015 edition of the journal Photochemistry and Photobiology.  In this study, the thyroid glands of rats were damaged with gamma radiation, and then were treated with low level laser of 632 nanometers for 6 sessions. The study concluded that the laser improved the rat’s thyroid function, liver function, antioxidant levels, and blood cell markers. The August 2014 edition of the journal Photomedicine and Laser Surgery found that cold laser treatment to patients with autoimmune thyroid disease significantly increased levels of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1). (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25101534) Why is this important? The August 1991 edition of the Journal of Autoimmunity found that TGF-β1 could calm down and suppress auto immune attacks, and that it may even prove helpful in causing remission of Graves disease. Patients with autoimmune thyroid disease often have altered blood flow within the thyroid. The 2012 journal ISRN Endocrinology found that 10 laser treatments improved blood flow within the thyroid, as visualized with Dopplar ultrasound. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23316383)

But perhaps the most exciting study I came across was in the August 2010 journal Lasers in Surgery and Medicine. Patients were given 10 treatments over 5 weeks. They found that all patients needed less thyroid medication, including 47% who did not require any medication through the 9-month follow-up. Can you imagine being able to go 9 months without needing thyroid medication?

Furthermore, the medication dosage needed in the other participants decreased, and remained decreased even 9 months later. TPOAb (thyroid antibody) levels also decreased,  and thyroid tissue appearance improved on ultrasound. This means that thyroid tissue damaged by auto immune attacks was actually getting repaired with laser stimulation. Again, no side effects were noted. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20662037)

These are just a few of the exciting studies that support the use of lasers in thyroid disease, but the applications go even beyond just the thyroid. As far back as December 1993, there was a far reaching study from Japan in the Keio Journal of Medicine that found that laser therapy on cancer cells “inhibits growth and increases cell-specific destruction”, and that “other immune system-related diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, some forms of eczema, asthma and asthma-related ulceration, have responded well to” laser therapy. I found numerous other studies that also suggested that cold laser was effective even for helping with thyroid cancers. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8126975)

So let’s review what these studies found. Cold laser therapy was shown to:

  1. Reduce TPO antibody levels
  2. Reduce the need for T4 medications in a majority of patients, even 9 months after treatment, and eliminate the need in nearly half the patients in one study
  3. Increase the amount of cellular antioxidants such as glutathione
  4. Improve thyroid tissue and vascularization on ultrasound examination
  5. Increase levels of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), which calms down the auto immune activity and may have the potential to cause remission of Graves’ disease
  6. Decrease the activity of inflammatory molecules such as nuclear factor kappa beta and interleukin 6
  7. Stimulate the repair of tissue damaged by the thyroid auto immune attack
  8. Have no side effects

These are all pretty powerful findings. I was surprised to find the data going back over 20 years supporting cold laser’s use on auto immune diseases, considering that most of us have never heard about it in mainstream media or from our doctors.

Obviously more studies are needed, but the current research suggests that lasers may provide significant help for the growing numbers of auto immune thyroid patients out there. Sleep: The Holy Grail of Wellness

Our quality of sleep determines our Wellness perhaps more than any other factor. Lack of sleep can kill.  Vehicle crashes from drowsy driving exceed those from BOTH drunk driving and driving under the influence of drugs combined.

After being awake for 19 hours, drivers were as impaired as those legally drunk.  Getting behind the wheel with 4 hours or less and you are 11.5 times more likely to crash.  Four hours of sleep and being drunk is the worst increasing the risk 30X.

Great sleep lifts all boats in the harbor and is the best anti-inflammatory known for both the brain and body.  It is the anti-aging miracle that heals both body and brain.

What is great sleep?

  1. Fall asleep easily without need for a drug.
  2. Stay asleep though the night with no interruptions.
  3. Awake rested, recharged and ready to go.
  4. A balance of NREM sleep and REM sleep

NREM (Non Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is deep delta wave sleep that allow our brain to prune away connections no longer being used, detox and flush away toxins, and normalize inflammation and swelling.  Lack of NREM sleep leads to poor memory and dementia symptoms.  Laser or other stimulation to the prefrontal cortex can enhance this critical form of sleep.

What helps us get to sleep?

Our circadian rhythm helps us wake up and fall asleep on schedule when working properly.  We need sunlight on our face and just 5 minutes of exercise to set our circadian clock in the morning.  In the evening, it is ideal to eat dinner at least 3 hours before bedtime.  Also really important to turn off computers, phones, TV, and any other electronics at least 1 hour before bedtime – 2 hours is better.

Lastly, avoid “junk light” especially in the evening.  LED lights, computers, TV’s, and phones emit harsh blue frequencies that rev the brain making quality sleep unlikely.  Wearing “True Dark” twilight glasses at least one hour before bed blocks 4 different sleep harming wavelengths of light.  Ideal is wearing our True Darks when the sun goes down.  https://truedark.com/twilights/
